Library photo of John in a studio – but not New Zealand.UPDATED 30th November WITH NEW WEB LINK. It is with thanks to we have a ‘New’, and dare I say it, ‘Exclusive’, John Peel interview? The fact is most of us won’t have heard this before so it’s a real treat. Recorded in Auckland for Student Radio station in 2002.
I can find no reference to it on their site though. Shame it would have been nice to have a photo to accompany this. John the raconteur is on fine form here and, as is invariably the case, very insightful. His brief narrative regarding the inner workings of Radio 1 back then, (doubtless nothing’s changed since), speak volumes. It’s this manifest of civil servant mentality that has kept me from listening to it ever since John’s passing.
I vaguely recall certain comments made by someone on the John Peel newsgroup ridiculing me for proclaiming there was no longer any reason to listen to Radio 1. Perhaps they ought to listen to this to understand why. It’s not the knowledge of the process but because of the results that I choose to abstain. I don’t need to know how it works, just that it doesn’t sound like anything I want to listen to. It also explains why people flock to, and to name a few. I am extremely grateful to John B.
For sending me this. You can find his online activities here: Download The File You have two options again: Torrent and Web. John Peel Interview via John Peel Interview via. Probably the final post of the year and I’ll keep it short because I’m a miserable cunt and if I had my way I’d be off somewhere they don’t indulge in this intolerably churlish festive facade.
Don’t get me started. Couple of downloads for you then. We’ll kick off with a message from Uphallman. Turn That Racket Down I’ve upped ‘Turn That Racket Down’ on to a couple of torrent sites I use cos 1 is a members site and they are generally very good at seeding. The response has been amazing. I put it on at the weekend and it’s been downloaded 75 times in those few days.
There are 11 seeders (plus me and I’ll leave it on inevitably) and six people are downloading at the mo. Found that no matter what happens with the length of time it takes to download on the Digitaldistractions site, once they’ve downloaded it they just bugger off! Turn That Racket Down – P2P: BitTorrent Yes I agree, Demonoid is pretty good. Thanks for your contribution Uphallman. John Peel’s Festive Fifty 1990 We miss Peelie every single day of the year right – we’re all agreed on that? But there was always something special about the Festive Fifty.
John always took great pride in putting the thing together. He would always confide how nervous he was of making a mistake – as if we ever minded. We loved him for it.
It’s what made him ‘one of us’ a ‘regular guy’. How many tracks would the Fall/Wedding Present/HMHB, etc have in the chart this year?
Would the tracks I voted for make an appearance – yes but always pretty low down! Would John have sniffed out another feeble attempt at vote rigging? Would it all fit comfortably on our newly unwrapped C90’s. I can’t have been the only one shining a torch inside the rapid unwinding cassette praying that I don’t see the leader tape for just a minute or two longer, followed inevitably by the ceremonial panic that was the manic tape flip.
Happy days:-) So here, from 1990, is the Festive Fifty as broadcast on BBC Radio 1. This is partly filling a request from Chris and maybe it’s one Eddie wanted too, I forget off hand (and we WILL sort out those dvd’s I promise – 2007 good for you?). Further notes and full track listings are contained in the file which may be aquired with one of the following options. Make sure you share around the file freely and have a toast to John and the Ravenscroft family. Oh, and a merry fucking Christmas from me.
Foul mouthed bastard. Domestic Empire Festive Fifty 1990 – P2P: BitTorrent Festive Fifty 1990 – HTTP: Rapidshare The rapidshare Peel folder – as listed in the top left corner – contains all these files and more. Siezed by an almost overwhelming and unexpected urge to live (at least when I started the draft), it’s a new posting! It’s good to know that the John Peel torrents are still going strong. And I’m sure there are others with more MB’s per second than me who have even better ratios.
Thanks to all the seeders:) John Peel Torrent Pack Vol.1 – Share Ratio: 10.114 Uploaded: 6.77GB JohnPeel20020821.rar – Share Ratio: 27.246 Uploaded: 2.04GB I don’t know how long the Rapidshare folder has been empty but clearly people do prefer Torrents to RS it seems, however I thnk there ought to be a range of download options so I’ll see about getting some plain old http files available. I offer my upmost apologies to the helpful Neil Kelleher who kindly sent in a good print-size version (1387×1387) of Peter Blake’s artwork – only for me to ignore him. If you’ve breathed more than a few strong words to the effect of my ungratefullness then I don’t blame you!
And now direct from the JP Web News Desk we bring you di-di-di-di, di-di-di, di-di-di-di-di (70’s style news jingle) more John Peel Web News. Peter Blake just so happens to be the subject of The South Bank Show tonight on ITV1 Sunday 19th November at 22:45, although there might be regional variations. There’s also an extended interview online at Check out Kat’s Karavan for some vintage Peel. DuffPaddy has an edition of Night Ride or ‘Son of Night Right’ but I’ll let him fill you in with the complete details, from May 1969. The Peel Tapes continue unabaited with Jon Horne‘s 1980 retrospective including the Festive Fifty and the Independent Labels Special from April of that year. Kris has a Tim Buckley session recorded for Peel’s Top Gear program in 1968 along with a mountain of others. Local (to me anyway) lad Jamie continues his knack for uncovering new hidden gems and dispensing old Peel sessions despite now having to live in the Real World where care-free memories of student days are now just a haze.
From July 2003 comes a Peel sesh by The French, whose only song I know is the one that got into the Festive Fifty, and Do Make Say Think from 2000 Indie MP3 is always worth visiting and now has it’s own “indie mp3 rapidshare archive”, which currently contains the complete Festive Fifty from 1986. The serving of the following special Peel dishes is now available: 5th December 2003, 4th February 2004, 30th March 2004, 27th November 2003, 29th November 2003, a Peel Compilation and a few other things. I also want to happily jump on the Ted Chippington publicity bandwagon. It seems the laconic comic – again from the 80’s – is appearing in public again with hopes for a new box set of his complete recordings. I can’t recall where I first saw him. Maybe on Channel 4’s The Tube or it could have been any one of a number of New Variety/Alternative Comedy events of it’s day, but suffice to say that I’ve never forgotton him and it’s good to hear his name being mention again.
If you like dry northern humour consider a move to Lancashire or on the other hand visit Frankosonic and lsiten to some audio examples beacuse my description doesn’t do him justice. Welcome back Ted. And finally Things have been quite here for about a month or more but regulars no doubt know this is to be expected due to health (no sympathy please – just stating facts), and, well because the internet is like that isn’t it? That’s what makes it so darn fun.
I’ve also been spending a little time and a lot of money building up a studio to record my own musical ideas. Big Up to; F.O.A.D. To Studiospares (useless cunts)! Rest assured though that any lulls will generally be followed by peaks of activity.
More torrents are planned – I still haven’t ruled out the possibility of getting something completed before Christmas. And Eddie (not Eric), may even get his disc soon too! I’ve a feeling I’ve forgotten one or two things I wanted to mention but if I remember they’ll go in the comments. I tire so easily these days – that do ya for now? Recommended Software: – It’s Freeware and very simple use. Guides to Using BitTorrent: to using µTorrent with pictures for every step! For BitTorrent in general. If you really do get stuck ( AFTER reading the guide above) just send me an email and I’ll do what I can to help:-D. It’s awfully dull to publish apologies and excuses rather than updates to one’s blog – almost as bad as using one of those ‘under construction’ images. Almost, but not quite.
Anyway the point I wanted to make is that the reasons for the infrequency of my posting is related to poor health and not due to any dwindling interest in the late and great Peelster or this site. People who send me news and links however will always take priority over anything I have to say because it’s John’s legacy I wish to promote not my own delusions of adequacy. So with all that out the way and my guilt tendencies somewhat pacified John Peel Shows From Finnish Radio Part 4: is now available via the following torrent links. A big thank you to finnish-phil for this excellent series and for keeping me informed: Let’s also not forget the mighty dubster over at the John Peel Tape And File Project who, despite my previous critcisms over the free download sites, continues to make available some great peel material (well it looks good to me.) Maybe it’s time I did a bit of trading with the man.hmmmm.
Jon’s site has four shows recorded by Peelie fo BFBS – that’s the British Forces Broadcasting Service to you – plus two other complete radio 1 programmes from 2003. One of my own, rather inadequate, claims-to-fame is that I once spent a few days installing new data links for the UK BFBS studios. I’d like to tell you more but it’s probably subject to the official secrets act and then, as we say, they’d have to kill me.
Podcasts, podcasts, everyone has one it seems but this one from Peel fan Lawrence in the US is both eclectic and professionlly put together and comes highly recommended. Five shows are currently available last I looked and full tracklisting is available on site. Direct from Kansas, gateway to oz. I know I had some other things on my mind but they seem to have wandered off, except to say that if you have time and are of a benevolent nature please view this website and help in any way you can. Thank you and goodnight.
